Our July meeting started on a somber note. The Birmingham Temple lost their Rabbi in a tragic auto accident the night before. We are deeply saddened by this loss. Rabbi Sherwin T. Wine was loved by all and will be missed by this community.
We moved on with our meeting and after the general Q&A we kicked right into full gear with a "live" photo shoot. MacGroup member and professional photographer Andy Greenwell brought in some professional lighting (Alien Bees) and a professional model. Andy gave important tips about positioning the lights and how to white balance your camera using a gray card. After getting his white balance set, he took a light reading with his Sekonic Light Meter. He then fired off a few shots with his Nikon D2X and then Terry imported those shots into Adobe Photoshop Lightroom. Next we switched to a different "always on" lighting system. The Westcott SpiderliteTD5 was used with a medium sized softbox. Terry used this light have a "what you see is what you get effect" because there is no flash. After Andy positioned the light and took light readings with his light meter, Terry then took some shots with his Nikon D80 while being tethered to his MacBook Pro using a USB cable. This way each shot went directly into Lightroom as they were being taken.

Next we moved into a short workflow demo on how to narrow down your shots to your favorites, add metadata, print them using various layouts and then export them for email.
Q&A from the Meeting
Q. You mentioned that there would be a more in-depth Lightroom video posted. Where is it?
A. You see my full 80 minute Lightroom 1.1 Workflow Video here. You can also subscribe to Terry's Adobe Creative Suite Video Podcast here in iTunes. iPod not required. You can watch these videos on your Mac for FREE. There are well over 100 episodes there.
Q. During the meeting you showed an example of a retouch job on Faith Hill for Redbook. Can we get that URL?
A. Sure, it's here.
Q. At the end of the meeting you walked us through a "gear guide" presentation with links to all the gear that you used. Can we get a copy of that presentation?
A. Absolutely! You can download the Gear Guide PDF here.
Q. You mentioned that you have taken Andy's Lighting Class. Where can I find out about the next class?
A. Download the flyer here.
Q. I won or bought Scott Kelby's Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Book for Digital Photographers. It covers Lightroom 1.0. Is there a 1.1 update?
A. Yes, Scott has produced a 1.1 addendum to the book that you can get in PDF by going here.
Q. You ran out of time before showing the Web module in Lightroom. Do you have an example of the output?
A. Yes, you can check out Terry's Montana gallery which was created from and uploaded to the web using Lightroom.
Q. In your retouching example, you mentioned that there were 3 things that you do. What were they?
A. I sharpen image (now in Lightroom 1.1 with great new controls), I lighten the eyes/teeth and I smooth the skin mostly on women. Here's an example (shot with the Nikon D80 and lit with the Westcott Spiderlite TD5).
Penny, before the retouching.
Penny, after some skin smoothing and eye/teeth lightening in Photoshop CS3.
Q. You said that you were using a Wacom Tablet during the retouching. Which model?
A. I use Wacom tablets at home and on the road. For travel, I use the Intuos 4x6 tablet. At home I primarily use the Cintiq.
Q. Want more tips?
A. I didn't get a chance to show this site at the meeting, but MacGroup member John Glick, has some great tips on his site.
Q. The new AirPort Extreme seems to be working great at the meeting. However, I have noticed that I can't send email while connected at the meeting?
A. AT&T blocks Port 25 (the common port for sending email) for non-SBC Yahoo! accounts. So you'll have to check with your email provider for instructions to send email when not on their network. If you have a .Mac email account, the sending instructions are here. Also note that using your povider's web mail interface should also work for sending email when not on their network.
Q. The iPhone wasn't mentioned at this meeting. Will we be covering it?
A. We'll definitely be covering the iPhone at some point. A little over 50% of those that answered our online survey would be interested in an iPhone meeting. Probably at a pre-meeting meeting (2-3PM). However, in the meantime check out Terry's exhaustive iPhone Review.
