Our December meeting took place in our NEW meeting location - The Birmingham Temple. Our main meeting topic was "Creating and Maintaining Websites with Adobe GoLive CS2." Terry took us through how to create a website from scratch using several of the built-in site templates. He then focused on how to use several GoLive CS2 features to help streamline the continuous updating of the site so that maintaining a site doesn't become a chore. Using GoLive's built-in Components, Smart Objects, Templates, Convert Text to Banner, taking advantage of Photoshop's variable text layers to update the text of an image and even how to create those cool Favorite Icons (favicon.ico) files that appear to the left of the URLs in your browser. Terry also emphasized that most people are already paying for webhosting with their ISP for personal websites. So why not take advantage of this space and publish your own website?
Q&A from the Meeting
Q. Terry you mentioned that most of us are already paying for webspace/hosting through our ISPs. How can I find out about accessing my space?
A. Every provider is different and therefore will have different names and rules and uploading procedures. So let's take comcast.net for example since several members are online via comcast: Comcast calls their service "Personal Web Pages" and it's off by default. You need to login to your account on comcast.net web page and in your account settings "enable personal web pages." The address to your page would be: http://your_user_name.home.comcast.net
The ftp server is: upload.comcast.net and you would use the same user name and password for your account. I had to dig deep (past all the automated site building wizards) to find this info.
Q. You mentioned that we could use GoLive to create sites and publish them to our .Mac accounts and that you would share the settings to upload?
A. That's right! With .Mac you get a ton of space now that can be divided between email and your iDisk. The available space on your iDisk can be used to host a website. You can build the website using .Macs built-in templates, which are easy, but then you're limited to their designs. Or you can completely bypass all of that and build your own custom site using GoLive and publish it to .Mac. For example Joseph Grey's site is a GoLive create site hosted on his .Mac account. Here are the settings:

Q. What was the title of the GoLive CS2 book you touted and gave away?
A. Adobe GoLive CS2 Tips and Tricks by Adam Pratt and Lynn Grillo
Q. Where can I get some more tutorials on using GoLive CS2?
A. Layers Magazine's website has several handy tutorials on GoLive CS2 and other Adobe products.
Q. Someone asked about printing barcodes from Address Book?
A. Steven Gold suggests Snail Mail which is FREEWARE.
Q. Someone asked about syncing a Palm to the Mac AND a PC and you mentioned a BETTER Mac app for Syncing Palms and other handhelds to the Mac. What was it?
A. The best handheld syncing utility for the Mac is hands down The Missing Sync. It blows away Palm Desktop. Their new 5.0 version takes syncing to hold new level with VERY TIGHT integration into your Apple apps including iPhoto and iTunes.
The Afterglow
The Afterglow took place at Ruby Tuesday. We'll continue to search out restaurants in the area so that we can have a couple to rotate between.
If you have any suggestions feel free to email them to Terry.
Special Thanks
